Abdulsettar al-Sattuf, who fled the war in Syria, lives in Turkey's southeastern Reyhanli district with his relatives - but he hasn't given up on his art since leaving home.

Over the course of two years, al-Sattuf, who has a degree in art history from Aleppo University, assembled mosaic portraits of 36 Ottoman sultans.

The massive art project took some 1.5 million stones to assemble, and the portraits span six centuries of Ottoman history.

Al-Sattuf said he decided to embark on the project to respond to the refuge they have found in Turkey.

The mosaics are currently kept in his house, where they cover some 20 square meters of floor space.
