Straight out of a James Bond movie, the new DeepFlight Super Falcon underwater aeroplane can fly underwater. This latest toy for the super-rich costs $1.7 million. The Telegraph reports that King Abdullah II of Jordan hired it for six weeks. He invited local dignitaries and schoolchildren aboard.
The aeroplane has 8.8 feet wide wings, and is able to go to a depth of 1,600 feet. It can fly underwater using a "downward lift" motion rather than sinking and rising like traditional submarines. The airplane-like movement allows it to travel at a speed of four to five knots while staying buoyant underwater.
The manufacturer claims that because the Sea Falcon is so quiet, it attracts sea life rather than chasing it away.
The Super Falcon can carry two people. If you are the kind of person who believes in the philosophy of “the more the merrier”, there’s a three person option available.
If you don’t have $1.7 million in your bank account (join the club), you can rent the Super Falcon for $10,000 a day. The super-rich Arab set who love a new fast toy can rub their hands together in glee.
There’s good news for us poorer folk. There’s another vehicle that takes non-millionaire Arabs across long distances with minimum fuss. It’s called the camel.
