Motorboat workshops are dumping their waste on Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) beaches which have become stinking landfills, residents say.

Mohammed Rashad, an Egyptian resident here, said the stinking trash on the beaches have affected the life of the residents at the nearby districts.

"The foul smell fill the air day and night," he added.

Ibrahim Abdulqader, Sudanese, said: "They pollute the land, air, and water and marine creatures as well."

Dr Saif Al Ghais, Director of the Environment Protection and Development Authority, said a number of staff inspectors are geared up to control the dumping of scraps.

"Legal action and hefty fine shall be imposed against anti-marine environment violators."

Rashid Al Yamahi, an Emirati resident, said the fishing ports at the Muairidh area always give him a shock with huge amount of waste dumped on the beach.

"Most of these are left fiberglass pieces left by the motorboats workshops."

Hassan Abdulrahman, an Emirati, said: "Some of the wastes there are left by the fishermen and fishing workers."

Saeed Salem, another resident, said: "The foul smell easily spreads from one place to another, and that leads to diseases and infections as well."

Dr Al Ghais said they will launch a special campaign to develop awareness about the critical impact of pollution on the environment. The staff inspectors will be monitoring the beaches of the emirate in three boats, he underlined.
