Shocking footage shows the wailing man being tied up in a cage by a mob of men.

This is the shocking moment a man in China was tied up in a cage and dunked in a river after he was caught 'cheating with his mistress', according to reports.

Footage widely circulated online shows the alleged cheating husband wailing with pain as a mob of men strapped him with ropes after he was found barely dressed in bed with a woman.

The method, loosely translated as 'dip in a pig cage', was practised by Chinese people in ancient times as a type of unauthorised punishment for adultery.

The man was in stable condition after the incident, police said. Four suspects have been detained amid an ongoing investigation.

The shocking scene took place in southern China's Maoming city in the wee hours of Friday morning, according to an official statement.

It came to light after footage of the man getting tied up inside a bamboo cage by a couple of men was widely shared on Chinese social media.

In the trending video, the man appeared to be shocked after the group of men barged into the room and caught him barely dressed in bed with a woman.

The alleged mistress can be seen standing by the door with a towel wrapped around her body.

This kind of punishment, which was never approved by Chinese laws, has mostly disappeared in recent centuries but are still used by villagers in rural parts of the country, reports said.

Local police were alerted and launched an investigation after the footage came to light.

The man in the video was taken to hospital for examination and did not suffer serious injuries, according to the statement.

Officers arrested the first suspect, a 41-year-old man, on Friday. Three other suspects, aged 36, 32 and 18, turned themselves in to the police the next day.

The authorities said the incident was caused by 'romantic disputes' without going into further details.

An investigation is underway.
