Australian artist Cat Wilson’s art exhibition “From Fez to Casablanca” recently took centre stage at the “So Art” Museum in Australia’s far southern coastal town of South Wales.
The exhibition, a rare cultural activity after months of closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, taught visitors about the North African kingdom’s rich heritage through cyanotype prints and digital collages inspired by the artist’s time living in the country from 2014-2017.
“I love new technologies and the possibilities they open up. But I am also drawn to the methodical, meditative and repetitive process of making things by hand,” said Wilson, who is known for her photography and geometric artistic works, at the exhibition’s opening.
“My time in Morocco, in these two very different cities (Fez and Casablanca) produced two series of work. Both are studies of pattern and form exploring the tension between the drive towards modernity and nostalgia for the past,” she added.
During her stay in Morocco, the Australian studied traditional Islamic geometric designs, a hallmark of the country’s art world that she now incorporates in her own works. Along with the country’s rich heritage, she also discovered a society that is rapidly modernising, particularly in the financial capital, Casablanca.
Using digital photographs of Casablanca’s striking architecture and influenced by her study in geometric design, Cat’s striking collages explore the tension between the traditional and the modern.
