ALBAWABA - Managers who are either worried about employee turnover, or those seeking to know the longevity of any new hires, might in the future have access to a Japanese AI solution made to predict possible departures in the future, for whatever reason.

The tool, made by Professor Naruhiko Shiratori of Tokyo City University in collaboration with a local start-up, works by analyzing employee data, including attendance records, age, and gender. It also makes use of information on past employees who left the company, or took leave, to establish a turnover model which fits each organization.

Shiratori explained to AFP that the AI tool uses this data to predict the chances of new recruits leaving, expressing the risk in percentage points. Currently still going through testing with multiple companies, the tool aims to generates a different predictive model for each organization.

Employers can use these predictions to help them see or figure out who to hire or not, but of course they also shouldn't solely depend on it as well, as that could have its own set of risks.

The tool's development came up through earlier research focused on predicting characteristics of university students likely to drop out. Future enhancements will be made in hopes of allowing the AI to recommend suitable job assignments for new hires based on data from interviews.

In Japan, where businesses typically hire graduates, around one in ten new hires quits within a year, according to government statistics. With nearly 30 percent leaving within three years, there's large interest in tools that could help reduce this.
