Authorities detained a 14-year-old - named only as Mario by officials - in connection with the stabbing deaths of his cousins, aged 7 and 14.

A teenager allegedly shouted 'I am tired of trying to be perfect for my mother' as he stabbed two cousins to death and wounded two others at a birthday party in Mexico.

The 14-year-old - named only as Mario by officials - was attending the party with family members on Saturday night when he allegedly launched the horrifying attack, according to newspaper El Universal.

The teen reportedly became enraged, grabbed a knife and attacked his cousins at approximately 6am inside a residence in the Mexico City borough of Venustiano Carranza.

Mario allegedly stabbed Eduardo, 14, before he turned to Nicolás, 7, and stabbed him at least 10 times.

Paramedics pronounced Eduardo dead at the scene as a result of a wound to his windpipe.

Nicolás, who was stabbed in the abdomen, was rushed to a local hospital where he also died.

According to neighbors, Mario was heard shouting, 'I am tired of trying to be perfect. Tired of trying to be perfect for my mother,' during the gruesome attack.

After attacking Eduardo and Nicolás, Mario allegedly stabbed his 10-year-old cousin Lía while she tried to call for help.

Nicolás' mother, Osiris, 27, reportedly rushed at Mario and was wounded as she tried to wrestle the knife away from him.

Mario's uncle, César, was able to calm him down and took the knife away.

Osiris told law enforcement agents that Mario had been neglected by his mother.

Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbuam said the National System for the Integral Development of the Family was assisting all of the families involved.

'It is regrettable, painful and hurtful,' she said.
