ALICIA SILVERSTONE HAD already entered the realm of glamour when she was six; her dad snapped some photos of her in a swimsuit, and those shots launched Alicia's modeling career. This led to TV commercials and a guest spot on ABC's The Wonder Years. Suddenly, Alicia's name began falling from the lips of casting agents whenever they were looking for a young actress who was talented, attractive, and smart.

Though in her youth she won a prize at a county fair for performing a dance routine to the theme from Flashdance, her big break came when the band Aerosmith cast her in three of their rock videos in 1993 and '94; her performances in "Cryin'," "Amazing," and "Crazy" made her familiar to MTV watchers and brought her praise from many sectors. She then portrayed a sneaky, seductive adolescent in The Crush, her first feature film. Some legal issues almost prevented her from working on this movie because of her age, and in order to evade child labor laws, Alicia had to become legally emancipated from her parents. The movie wasn't big at the box office, but it put the young actress on the map.

Amy Heckerling's comedy Clueless (an adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel Emma) provided Alicia with a role that would not only establish her as an emblem of her generation but would make her a star. Her portrayal of hip Beverly Hills teenager Cher won her rave reviews to boot. Clueless was a smash at the box office and became a regular and repeated rental on video. Alicia then signed a $10 million contract with Columbia pictures.

Silverstone started her own production company, First Kiss Productions, with a three-year, non-exclusive first-look deal for all projects. Under that banner, she made her executive producer debut with Excess Baggage in 1997. Most recently, Alicia starred opposite perennial good-guy Brendan Fraser in the time-warp comedy Blast From the Past.
