Ever since Egyptian actress Suad Hosni, known as the Cinderella of Egyptian cinema, passed away, a number of different conclusions were reached regarding the actual cause of death. Her death marked one of the biggest mysteries that hit the Egyptian cinema, with many speculating whether she committed suicide, accidentally fell over the balcony, or was assassinated. People have been waiting anxiously for two years for British court officials to make their final verdict regarding her death.
According to the London based daily, Dar Al Hayat, the final moment came on Friday July, 11, 2003, when a British court made an official announcement regarding Suad’s death and stating clearly that she had committed suicide, leaving no room for any other speculations. Two years ago, the late actress’s body was found on the pavement of Stewart Tower in west London, where she was staying with a friend for some peace of mind after a depression had taken over her life.
The hearing at the British court lasted over two hours listening to different witnesses tell their side of the story. The court had also called in different medical and criminal investigators in the UK, who have wrapped up their investigation and concluded that there was no evidence indicating the actress was in any quarrel or had accidentally fallen, but had thrown herself from the balcony of her friend’s apartment on the sixth floor and killed herself.
Once the news of the verdict reached Egypt, artists insisted on keeping the memory of Suad alive regardless of what a British court may conclude, saying that the late actress has given so much to the Egyptian cinema and that she will remain one of its most memorable icons.
In 2001, a British police spokeswoman declared that Hosni committed suicide, stating that investigations into her death ruled out a theory that the actress was murdered. A number of Egyptian artists had filed a suit with the Egyptian prosecutor general accusing the host of murdering the actress, an Egyptian source in the judiciary branch said. However, other reports have suggested that Hosni was suffering of depression and anxiety caused by medications she took in ten years of living with a disease in the spinal column, which left her paralyzed.
One week before her death, the late actress was staying with Nadia Yusri at the latter’s apartment. The Egyptian artists refused to accept the story that Hosni committed suicide because, they said, she had been always an optimistic lady. The artists pointed to reports that there had been a brawl and screaming 15 minutes before Hosni plunged from the apartment’s balcony.
