The Sci-Fi Channel will launch the epic story Maatkara, an online animated series, which chronicles the adventures of an Egyptian princess, on June 28, according to vibe.com.
Soul singer and Sony/Epic artist Amel Larrieux will provide the voice for Maatkara. Maatkara's narratives are culled from Egyptian mythology and combine both the futuristic themes related through science fiction storytelling and the historical themes recounted from ancient Egypt.
In Maatkara, the story's protagonist is a priestess and healer chosen by the gods as a divine bringer of justice who must fight evil forces. Actor Kevin Conway is the voice of the evil God of Chaos, named Set.
Dawit Lessanu, Maatkara's creator, told vibe.com that "We tried to combine science fiction with the ancient culture of Egypt, and then wrote a story around it. A lot of it has to do with representing ancient Africans in a positive manner that's not stereotypical. The heroine's conflict is fulfilling her obligations as a priestess and a warrior having to destroy, yet heal. It causes a fundamental rift in her on many levels, internally and spiritually. It's an important struggle, because it's still common to what many of us go through today."
Thirteen weekly episodes will offer visually stunning portrayals of ancient Egyptian culture against a futuristic backdrop that comes to life over the Internet. An original soundtrack, brilliant color and exceptional animation recreate a fantastic world full of symbolism and intrigue. Although the character's protagonist is a black female, the series is targeted at audiences of all cultures, backgrounds and age groups.
