Set to be released in October 2016, American sci-fi action thriller Geostorm will have Egyptian actor Amr Waked in its cast.
Geostorm stars Gerard Butler, Katheryn Winnick and Abbie Cornish.
Butler plays a satellite designer involved in fixing a climate-controlling satellite malfunction. As he travels to space, the plot to assassinate the president unfolds on Earth. This sci-fi action movie is a directorial debut of Dean Devlin, known mainly as co-writer, actor and producer of films such as Independence Day (1996), Godzilla (1998) and Stargate (1994).
Waked is cast for a role of an international space-station security expert Ray Dussette. According to Variety, his character will be "an important ally for Butler or a thorn in his side, depending on where the screenplay takes him."
On 26 January, the actor tweeted from his account, "I joined a great production called Geostorm :)... http://fb.me/2FDqGaDuV."
Waked is Egypt's new biggest international star who most recently played cop in Luc Besson's the sci-fi thriller Lucy (2014), cast opposite Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman. In parallel, he appeared as an advisor to Mongol King Kublai Khan in TWC/Netflix TV series “Marco Polo.”
Waked’s previous international appearances include a score of successful films including Stephen Gaghan's Syriana (2005), HBO's television mini-series House of Saddam (2008) and Steven Soderbergh's Contagion (2011). He also had a prominent role with Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt in the 2011 British film Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, directed by Lasse Hallström and nominated for three Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical).
Prior to his international breakthrough, Waked was already popular inside Egypt for his diverse roles in films like Yousry Nasrallah's Geneint Al-Asmak (Fish Garden, 2008), Marwan Hamed's Ibrahim Labyad (2009) and Ibrahim El-Batout's El-Sheta Ele Fat (Winter of Discontent, 2012).
