None of Egypt’s actresses are good enough for Magdy Ahmed Ali’s next project, it seems. The filmmaker has revealed that he is looking for a non-Egyptian to play the role of legendary singer Umm Kulthom in a new biopic. And the frontrunner for the part is rumoured to be Tunisian star Hend Sabry.

A source spilled: “Hend has great screen presence and chooses her roles very carefully. She has taken on very good dramas and won awards at prestigious film festivals, so it is kind of a no-brainer.”

However, Hend’s management have confirmed that she has neither accepted nor refused the role.

Midah Al Qamar tells the story of fellow Egyptian legend Baligh Hamdi, a multi-taltented musician and composer, who created many songs for Umm Kulthum over the years. It is yet to be revealed who will take on the male lead.
