She settles for a supporting role in new film Doctor Strange, but Rachel McAdams received top billing on Monday evening while attending its UK launch at London's Westminster Abbey.

The Canadian actress, 37, outshone leading man Benedict Cumberbatch in a sweeping off-the-shoulder Elie Saab gown as she continues to promote her latest movie, a superhero adventure adapted from the popular Marvel comic book franchise.

With a cinched waistline, beneath which a sheer lower half fully exposed her pert bottom and toned legs, Rachel ensured she commanded attention while posing for photos alongside her cast-mates.

Bold embellishments appearing to illustrate a flock of birds in flight added to the outfit’s distinctive design, as did its single sheer sleeve.

The actress allowed her ensemble to take centre stage by opting for limited accessories, while her blonde locks were neatly tied into a simple, effortless bun.

Rachel, who plays Doctor Strange's love interest Christine Palmer in the film, was in high spirits as she posed alongside co-star Benedict, who looked typically dapper in a smart two-piece suit.

The British star, 40, completed his smart evening ensemble with a crisp white shirt and black tie, while polished dress shoes rounded things off.

Reunited on the red carpet, the two actors greeted one another like old friends as they prepared for the latest screening of their forthcoming superhero adventure.

The pair were joined by co-star Tilda Swinton, 55, whose androgynous trouser suit ensured she claimed her fair share of the spotlight.

Pinched, eighties inspired shoulders gave the outfit a distinctive retro flourish, while its fitted design drew attention to her slender physique.

The celebrated actress added to her look with a pair of conventional stiletto heels, while her liberal use of bold red lipstick gave the overall look an added splash of vibrancy.

Mads Mikkelsen, another of the film's stars, was also in attendance on Monday night.

The Danish actor, 50, opted for a classically styled three-piece suit with smart pin stripes for his appearance at the one-off event.

Elsewhere leading man Benedict had good company in the form of wife Sophie Hunter - just days after it was revealed that the 38-year old is expecting their second child.

The brunette covered up in a garish pink cape dress while posing for photos alongside her husband.

Sophie completed her  look with a pair of strappy red heels, while soft pink lipstick added an extra pop of colour to an already eye-catching ensemble.

The pair's appearance comes after the two told E! they were 'absolutely thrilled' about the prospect of expecting a second child.

They welcomed their son  Christopher in June 2015, just a few months after their Valentine's Day wedding.

Benedict has previously said he hoped to add to his brood, joking he might 'go for a (Cumber)batch of boys.'

Other guests on the night included artist Damien Hirst's ex-girlfriend Roxie Nafousi, classical singer Camilla Kerslake and presenter Sarah-Jane Crawford, who looked typically stylish in a strappy grey evening dress.

Benedict stars in the Marvel comic book movie as a brilliant surgeon Stephen Strange who is injured in an accident.

He is then trained by the Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton, in the magical arts which he then uses to take on the evil Kaecilius, who is played by Hannibal star Mads.

Doctor Strange hits UK cinema screens on October 25.
