The Angry Birds Movie opens across the Middle East on Thursday, having jumped the gun with a photocall and showing in front of the world's press just before the start of the 69th Cannes film festival.

Sony's animated picture adaptation of the addictive video game will be dubbed in Arabic, with one minor change: the bad guys, who are pigs, or “khanazir" in Arabic, still look the same but are now called janazir, which can be loosely interpreted as “squishy".

Raya Abirached, the Lebanese presenter of Scoop with Raya and Arabs Got Talent, will voice one of the characters.  The popular television personality is pregnant and was expected to be in Dubai for the premiere of the movie, but was forced to cancel at the last minute on doctors' orders!

"Sooo disappointed I couldn’t be there to meet you!" she posted on Instagram.

In a statement, Abirached said: “It is hugely important to have these films localised. It happens in every big movie market in the world, like Germany, France and Italy – they always have a localised performance for the local audience. This transformation will give Arab audiences a chance to engage more with the film alongside their English-speaking counterparts."

The Angry Birds Movie opened in French speaking markets today and will open in the UK, Germany, Russia, Spain, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, the Middle East and others by the weekend.
