'Rita and Cara's relationship has always been speculated about. While they never confirmed or denied anything, Rita has definitely allowed her music to do the talking,' a source told the media outlet.
'She has been honest with pals about what went on with her and Cara and during the recording process in the studio. She was happy to discuss the model being the main influence behind the track.'
Rita and Cara were inseparable until they had a falling out in 2013.
But an interview with #Legend back in June 2017, seemed to deny that Cara was her muse.
'At the first listen, you'll be, like, 'Oh, wow. She's definitely letting us know that she likes girls.' But it's not that,' she said.
'It is called Girls because I have features with my actual friends on it. The song is basically about females complimenting other females and supporting each other.
'When Katy Perry sang I Kissed A Girl, it wasn't necessarily her saying, 'Guys, I'm a lesbian.' It was more about feeling empowered to be outspoken and free to choose and pick, and say things.'
The chat-topping tune features Cardi B, Charli XCX and Bebe Rexha.
During an interview with People, Rita, who has been dating songwriter Andrew Watt for over a year, addressed her lyrics that seemed to hint at her sexual orientation.
'I'm 50/50, and I'm not gonna hide it. I'm not hiding what I am, who I am, if I wanna do this, if I wanna do that. That's just how it's gonna be,' she said. 'I'm definitely an open book with this record.'
