Simon Cowell has expressed his delight in welcoming Ant McPartlin back to ITV competition series Britain's Got Talent in the near future, following the host's one-year break from TV presenting.

In an interview with The Sun, the music mogul, 58, insisted the 42-year-old's decision to take time off from work was the 'right thing to do', amid the host's recovery from drink and drug addiction.

Talking to the publication, X Factor's head judge revealed: 'That is what I always thought would happen, so I am happy to hear that. He is welcome back and we have missed him. But he has done the right thing by taking some time off, and he will come back fresh and will enjoy it.'

The Newcastle native has presented the talent show with his co-star Declan Donnelly, also 42, ever since the series' first edition in 2007.

Revealing that the pair weren't in contact during his recovery process, Simon added: 'We didn’t speak while he was in rehab but we got messages through Dec – as we have always done – but I didn’t want to impose on his privacy.'

Welcoming the star back with open arms, the Syco founder went on: 'But we have always made it clear what our relationship is, we help each other. We are friends and he is welcome back anytime.'

Simon's interview comes after it was revealed Ant will continue to take a break from all television presenting roles until 2019, meaning he will not present the upcoming series of I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! in November.

Taking over the role for this year's edition as a host for the jungle series is Holly Willoughby, who confirmed her position earlier this week.

In addition, Ant and Dec have made the joint decision not to present a new series of Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway in Spring 2019.

The Text Santa star said in a statement to MailOnline: 'My recovery is going very well and for that to continue having spoken to Dec and ITV, I have made the decision to take the rest of the year off.'

He continued: 'I’d like to thank both Dec and ITV for their continued support and I look forward to getting back to work in the new year.'

The troubled presenter first sought rehab treatment in June 2017 after becoming addicted to prescription drugs and alcohol following a botched knee surgery in 2015.

He entered rehab for a second time in March after he was involved in a three-car collision in Richmond and was discovered to be over the limit behind the wheel.

Ant pleaded guilty to drink-driving in April and he received a record-breaking £86,000 fine, as well as a 20-month ban from driving.

Following his statement, it was reported Ant is living in a swanky £4million mansion in London as his romance with girlfriend Anne-Marie Corbett continues.

According to the Daily Star, the presenter is believed to be renting the luxurious property - complete with six bedrooms, a games room and sprawling garden - for an eye-watering £12,000-a-month, in a bid for a new start following his split from make-up artist Lisa Armstrong, 41.

Ant has chosen a property in a quieter part of the capital in order to aid his recovery from drink and drug addiction, which has led him to cancel all of his working commitments.

The star's romance with Anne-Marie, his former PA, was revealed earlier this year, after he confirmed he called it quits with wife of twelve years Lisa in January.
