A pair of UAE-based twins have set tongues wagging among sci-fi fans, after it was revealed that they’ll be appearing in the upcoming Star Wars film.
Set to be released in December 2015, Episode VII will reignite the intergalactic saga under the watchful eye of director J.J. Abrams (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek).
Filming has recently been taking place in the Abu Dhabi desert, where 25-year-old sisters Thea and Lika Shengelaia headed for four days of shooting. The Sharjah siblings – originally from the Georgian capital of Tbilisi – are also known as musical duo Healer Twins, a reference to the fact that they’re both training to become doctors.
City Times spoke with Thea about her and Lika’s experience in the epicentre of a world-renowned Hollywood franchise.
How did you and Lika become part of the new Star Wars movie?
We auditioned for Ali F. Mostafa’s new film From A to B. We didn’t get chosen, but then we received a call from the casting agency a month later about the Star Wars movie. Apparently they were looking for twins – it was quite surprising, we didn’t know anything about it.
What can you tell us about your time on set?
We went to the Abu Dhabi desert two weeks ago, and Lika and I were given the same special costumes and make-up to wear. Apparently they had spent four months preparing the sets. It was quite exciting. We were outdoors in the middle of the desert, and there were two main actors there for shooting – John Boyega and Daisy Ridley. But we didn’t have lines, just reaction shots. I can’t talk about the nature of the scene though!
Was J.J. Abrams there?
He was there, and he came to talk to Lika and I because he really liked what we were wearing. He asked us our names and said who he was – as if we hadn’t guessed!
Did anyone give you a script?
No. Even some of the assistant directors didn’t even know the script. They just told us what to do.
Did you watch the Star Wars movies as kids?
Of course! We loved it, although we weren’t crazy fans.
Can you tell us a little about Healer Twins’ upcoming debut single, Snake in the Desert?
We’re recording it now and we’re planning on releasing it in July, hopefully on our birthday on the 23rd. It’s produced by (noted Dubai composer) Kamal Musallam, and he wants to work with us for our album as well.
