ALBAWABA - After George Clooney and Amal, who is a human rights lawyer, got French citizenship, they were criticized by U.S. President Donald Trump.
On December 26, French officials quickly granted citizenship to the Clooneys and their kids. This became public knowledge earlier this week. Jean-Noël Barrot, France's Minister of Foreign Affairs, supported the process and stressed the couple's charitable work.
On New Year’s Eve, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France, which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration.”
George Clooney has been a well-known Democratic Party fundraiser for a long time. He wrote a widely talked about op-ed in the New York Times in July 2024, calling on President Biden to resign as the Democratic candidate after Biden did poorly in a debate against Trump. Biden dropped out of the race less than two weeks later.
In his post, Trump talked about that event and made fun of Clooney's political judgment. “Remember when Clooney … dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala (K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the country, including Tim Walz and Gavin Newsom, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat,” he wrote.
Clooney held a fundraiser for Biden's campaign, which Trump talked about. Biden didn't know who the actor was at the event, according to a book by two American reporters.
Trump continued his attack by dismissing Clooney’s film career. “Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few and totally mediocre movies. He wasn’t a movie star at all; he was just an average guy who complained constantly about common sense in politics,” Trump wrote.
The star said that Trump and Clooney have known each other since before Trump got involved in politics. In a 2021 interview with the BBC, Trump—between his first and second terms—Clooney said, "He was just this knucklehead … There was nothing special about him; he was just a guy who was always trying to get with girls.
