Who's who of 2014: it was a star-studded year in the UAE

They can forget all their Oscars, Grammys and record sales - a City Times Award is what they really want. So who topped our gong list during their visit to the UAE in 2014

The Rolling Stones’ Rocking Wrinklies Statue
Goes to their contemporaries The Who, who brought this year’s Grand Prix to a close. We love a bit of guitar music, so we were happy to see Roger Daltrey and co. take to the stage. It’s a just a shame one of their biggest hits, Who are You? appeared more a genuine inquiry than rock anthem.

The ‘Who Says Dubai is an Extension of University?’ Nostalgia Award
There was only one contender and thus one winner for this one. Boyzone haven’t been relevant for at least a decade, yet their visit in May was so talked about it made us come over all 1997. Baggy jeans, shirts with matching colour ties and the shameful use of the word ‘duh,’ while cocking an unimpressed look were all legitimately back in vogue for the day.

The Frozen Special Mention For Remaining Exactly the Same
The prize is shared on this occasion between Kelsey Grammer and Eva Longoria, who visited Dubai for the film festival in December. Despite laying their characters to rest 10 and three years ago respectively, both have not aged, still looking pretty much the same as they did on-screen as Frasier Crane and Gabrielle Solis.

The ‘Demonstrating The Direction Your Movie Career is Going in Visual Form’ Plate
Goes to Will Smith for his sky dive over Dubai in January.

The Shrek Poor Relation Lifetime Recognition Wooden Cup
Named after the cumbersome green ogre who never looked comfortable among royal family members, better suited to living in a swamp – one name stood above the rest for this gong. Unfortunately Khloe Kardashian wasn’t able to personally accept her award when she appeared at Cle Dubai’s opening in October, but we’re not sure she would have had space for it under that bridge anyway.

The Michael Jackson WTF!? Single White Glove
In May, Nicolas Cage - that’s right Nicolas Cage - came all the way to Dubai for a night to launch the new Audi A8 at the Armani Hotel. Okay.

The ‘When the Boss is Having a Rant’ Biting Your Tongue Gong
Goes to every journalist at the John Travolta Breitling watch press conference in December for not asking the one question everyone wants to.

The Kim Kardashian  Ker-ching ‘Loves Me Some Kash’ Golden Plaque
Goes to the trophy’s founder Kim Kardashian. Every year this category proves stiff competition for the celebrity visitor nominees, but nobody can compete with Kimmy. Paid to show up at Parfum Monde in November to promote her own product for which she receives proceeds of every sale, whilst flying in on the organiser’s dime and staying at Atlantis for free, along with a daily spending allowance thrown in for good measure, we can only think Mrs. West would be laughing all the way to the bank if she weren’t so busy melting down this award.

The Madonna ‘Keep on Truckin’’ Baseball Cap and Thermos
Not so much ‘from the block,’ as, ‘been round the block,’ J-Lo can still shake it despite her advancing years. Long may it continue if her Meydan show in March is anything to go by.

The Sophia Vergara ‘Acting Completely In-Line With Stereotypes’ Award
She’s known for nothing other than the cocktail-sipping commercialist Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw, obsessed with handbags, Cosmos and of course shoes. So what does Sarah Jessica Parker do? Come to Dubai’s Harvey Nichols to launch a shoe collection before ending up in a nightclub.
