Hala Musrati: Libya's new al-Sahaf

Published April 6th, 2011 - 01:20 GMT

As Gaddafi's speeches and wild statements quieten down, Hala Musrati is now the self-appointed spokeswoman for the pro government  national voice  who carries the Gaddafi cause, generating quite a stir in the increasingly incredulous and bemused world audience.

This Libyan State news anchor woman has had some airtime recently  launching a pretty strong smear campaign on Libya's alleged rape-victim people heroine Iman al-Obeidi. As she defiantly emphasizes her propensity to truth and candour, she reminds of other far-fetched propoganda artists that the media exposes by showing us up-to-date information that belies his dubious and deluded announcements, particularly in sound-bite form. People have been drawing parralels between her, and former Iraq Information Minister, Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf who became a laughing stock: Comical Ali with his confident statements: 'We are winning'. Just as he was spun by the Western media into entertainement gig and spoofs, so Hala Musrati is the subject matter already, certainly in the Arab world, of such comedy and entertainment.
She has taken it upon herself to tirelessly -single-handedly crusade her Libya that is under seige by an enemy outside attack. She uses a bizarre mix of traditional staid thinking of family clan pride and patriotic propoganda, made up of blatant exaggerations and mistruths. She prefaces some of her most outrageous and personal attacks with apology, exonerating the honour of Libyan people, and the respectable family clan of 'Obeidi', distancing this discredited woman from a direct link.
This Libyan national crusader, railing against the treachery in her rebellious people, is no stranger to media in her owner checquered past of literary, media and legal experience.  A city girl born in Tripoli, she is a Bachelor in Law and a Post Graduate of international law: interestingly her Masters thesis was in 'Regulation and role of international judicial settlement of disputes in the Arab and non-Arab world,' so one might be pardoned for expecting a well-balanced, well-adjusted fair character. She is a writer, operating in Libya, furthermore a founding member of the Association of Writers, Member of Writers Unions and poetry guilds in Libya.
Instead what emerges is a picture of an unbalanced propoganda artist, issuing increasingly untrue and often mysogynistic statements that do down her own gender! Bizarrely, she emphasizes her propensity for telling truth. She reminds us here again Comical Ali, former Iraq Information Minister.
Above, some of her most outlandish and far-fetched statements, or motions.

She defended Gaddafi's decree forbidding people from attend Fajer prayer: "All the corruption and damage comes from mosques these days; Gaddafi spent millions on mosques in Africa." Sound contradictory?

She launched a vicious campaign on alleged rape victim, Iman, branding her a drunken whore; discrediting her claims that found sympathy with womankind as well as supporters of the people versus Gaddafi.

On Iman, a whore woman crying crocodile tears who doesn't belong to the women of Libya. Musrati’s words exemplify how women can oppress other women.

Making her mark as an investigator for the Libyan state: She subjected a state-arrested female Syrian journalist to an interrogation on her soliciting with the opposition forces.

On Iman: Her logic- real Libyans would not openly admit to being raped- they would clam up to guard family honor and take pregnancy tests in private.

Think back to the apologetic Umbrella Speech.
