ALBAWABA - A fire broke out early Sunday at Aramco’s Jazan refinery in southwestern Saudi, no injuries were reported, according to the Saudi Energy Ministry. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack.
Yemeni Armed Forces spokesman Yahya Saree claimed that Yemeni forces carried out a drone strike on an Aramco refinery in Jizan, reportedly scoring a direct hit.
Saree said, "The Yemeni Armed Forces succeeded in targeting the Aramco refinery in Jizan with a drone, and the strike led to a direct hit." He added, "This targeting comes in response to Saudi Arabia's breach of the airspace of the provinces of Saada and Hajjah with its drones."
Intriguingly, without stating what caused the fire, the Energy Ministry stated in a post on X that the fire has been brought under control and that the authorities were dealing with the incident.
The Red Sea refinery on the border with Yemen processes 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day to produce refined products such as gasoline; making it a lucrative target for Houthi attacks, as they have indeed attacked it before.
The refinery was shut down on July 27th after an attack by the Houthis damaged the Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) complex and tank farm area of the refinery.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for this attack as well, saying they’d hit Saudi oil facilities in Jazan and Yanbu, further enlarging their power projection on the Red Sea with threats to shipping and oil facilities.
Despite the fire and the continuing attacks, Aramco chief Amin Nasser said the attacks had no material operational or financial impact, adding that the attacks only caused some production interruptions that can be restored quickly to the refinery.
