Jordan expelled the Syrian ambassador Bahjat Suleiman from the Kingdom Monday, according to Agence France Presse.

Jordan's state news agency Petra reported that Suleiman was declared a persona non grata by Amman's foreign ministry and must leave the kingdom within 24 hours.

“The government considers the Syrian ambassador to Jordan persona non grata and demanded he leave the country within 24 hours. The decision comes after Suleiman’s repeated insults to Jordan and its leadership, institutions and citizens, through his meetings, writings and social media websites,” Petra quoted foreign ministry spokeswoman Sabah Rafi as saying.

Bahjat has allegedly violated diplomatic protocol based on his online postings that are explicitly critical of Jordan, according to the Kingdom's foreign ministry.

More than one million refugees from Syria's civil war now reside in Jordan in exile.
