Just when you thought the US election couldn’t get more ridiculous, last week, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange said he has hacked emails showing Hillary Clinton armed Syrian jihadists as secretary of state.
“...Weapons flows going over to Syria, being pushed by Hillary Clinton, into jihadists within Syria, including ISIS (Daesh), that’s there in those emails,” Assange told Democracy Now. Conservative and other outlets such as The Daily Wire began to report on the claims this week, and the story was circulated on social media.
A more careful scrutiny of Assange’s words, however, shows that it’s misleading to say Hillary armed jihadists and Daesh (ISIS) directly. Assange claimed that Clinton pushed for “weapons flows going over to Syria,” which is true. And he then says the flows were “into jihadists.” That’s not claiming Clinton armed jihadists directly and intended to do so. It’s saying she pushed for weapons into the country and they ended up in the hands of jihadists.
US weapons did make their way to Daesh, of course, but that’s better explained by the Iraqi army surrendering to them and other like events.
However, to truly understand Assange’s allegations, people will need to go through the hacked emails themselves, available here.
