Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, aka ‘Brangelina', are divorced. But even in the Middle East–where there are much more pressing news items–people are still talking about the fall of the Hollywood super couple. Did you know that some of their romance was spent in the Arab world? Jolie has done considerable humanitarian work in Jordan, Lebanon and elsewhere. And Brad? Well, he’s starred in many movies set in the Middle East! Here are some of the couple’s most significant moments in this part of the world.
Jolie has visited Jordan four times, the most recent of which was this month. In September, Jolie visited the Azraq Refugee Camp. Here, she called attention to the 75,000 Jordanians trapped at the berm–a no man’s land at Jordan’s border with Syria–and other challenges refugees face in the Kingdom. Pitt actually tagged along his humanitarian superstar wife on one of these trips. In 2009, the two were photographed visiting an orphanage and other sites in Jordan.
Also in her capacity as a UNHCR goodwill ambassador, Jolie visited Syrian refugees in Lebanon in March of this year. She braved a torrential downpour to call for peace in Syria and more international support for refugees while in Zahleh, a city in the country’s east.
Jolie’s even visited Libya, by no means a safe destination. In 2011, she visited rebel-controlled Misrata, Libya where she praised the revolution against Muammar Gaddafi.
And Pitt? He hasn’t traveled as much in the Middle East as his soon-to-be ex-wife in real life, but he’s quite the nomad on the big screen.
Pitt is set to star in the upcoming romantic thriller movie Allied, which takes place in Casablanca, Morocco. They’re actually shooting in the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, though. You could perhaps argue that Jolie and Pitt’s relationship died in the (fictional setting of) this North African city, as Pitt is rumored to be cheating with co-star Marion Cottilard, which is being cited in Hollywood media as a reason for the divorce.
World War Z
In the apocalyptic 2013 film, Pitt plays a UN worker searching for patient zero of a deadly zombie plague. This quest eventually leads him to Jerusalem, where he meets with a Mossad agent.
In his first movie after filming Mr. and Mrs. Smith–where he met his then co-star Jolie–Pitt starred in Babel, where he played an American man traveling in Morocco with his wife.
