Following the shooting of an Emirati student by police in America on Sunday, Emiratis have taken to social media to express their sadness and anger.
Saif Nasser Mubarak Ali Alameri was shot dead after fleeing from police in Ohio, where he was studying law on a scholarship. It seems the young Emirati had been pursued on foot after causing a car accident prior to his death.
The officer who shot him is on paid leave pending the results of an investigation.
Many in the UAE have tweeted condolences using the hashtag “Saif Nasser is in the protection of God”, which was trending overnight:

There were also words of criticism for American police, which has often been challenged in recent times over the killings of unarmed black men. Previous incidents have sparked the “Black Lives Matter” movement, and protests across the US.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has said that it is closely following the investigation into the incident.
Mohammed Al Raisi, Undersecretary to the Ministry, announced that: "In light of this follow-up, and after details of the painful incident are clarified by the authorities, the Ministry will issue a more comprehensive statement at a later time."
