Just over a month ago, firebrand Israeli politician Avigdor Lieberman made a bold promise to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
“If I’m the Defense Minister, I give Mr. Haniyeh 48 hours. Either you return the bodies and the civilians, or you’re dead,” he said in a television interview. “As far as I’m concerned, you should order a plot in the nearest cemetery for yourself.”
Today, Lieberman has a chance to make good on his word. He really is the Defense Minister of Israel now.
So is time running out for Ismail Haniyeh? Helpfully, there’s now a website devoted to keeping us informed of whether he's met his maker.
Dr Yuval Dror, a communications professor, has created isimailhaniyehdeadyet.com to count the minutes, seconds and hours that the apparently-doomed Palestinian leader manages to stay alive in spite of Lieberman’s vow to have him imminently killed.
In his blog, Dror said he started the count in response to right-wing criticism that Israel’s left produced nothing more than hot air. “I’m convinced that I’ll be turning the no to yes within 48 hours,” he said. “Because only the right can”.
Lieberman is yet to comment on the timer. Whether Haniyeh has indeed purchased a cemetery plot in preparation for his imminent demise is also unconfirmed.
