Hollywood actor Jean-Claude Van Damm got a lesson from Facebook users on Tuesday after posting a picture of himself in Jerusalem.

"Shalom from Jerusalem, Israel!" Van Damm originally wrote as the caption to a photo of himself at the Old City of Jerusalem in an "Israel" hat.

Commenters quickly jumped in to the mix. "You should say salam from palestine ;)" wrote social media user Soufiane Benalla, earning 1,288 "likes" for the comment. "Jeruzalem is not from Israel but from Palestina," another commenter said, and was quickly awarded with over 800 thumbs up.

The city of Jerusalem was split between Israel and Jordan from 1948 until 1967, when the Israeli Defense Forces seized the eastern half of the city and annexed it as a part of Israel. But the annexation has never been recognized by the international community, and East Jerusalem today remains largely Palestinian.

Peace plans designed to create a Palestinian state in the West Bank typically forecast East Jerusalem as the future Palestinian capital.

Van Damme later edited his post to simply say "Hello from Jerusalem!!"
