Egyptians have taken to social media to offer their humorous responses after it was widely reported that women in the country would be required to undertake military service.

In fact, a new law has implemented “civilian” conscription for female Egyptians, a form of community, rather than military, service.

The decision, taken by the country’s Minister for Social Solidarity, Ghada Wali, will see new female graduates and young men not enrolled in the army required to take on a year of unpaid work. The work will largely be focused on social projects, including providing assistance to orphans and the elderly.

However, the small matter of the truth did not stop Twitter and Facebook filling with satirical responses as “girls’ conscription” trended on Friday:

[This is what would happen] if girls were in the army. “Give me a knife to stab the enemy”

What is wrong private Ayman?

Never mind, Sir, if you were interested you would know by yourself.

Artillery: pay attention...get ready...fire

What is the problem, private Muna?

Sir, I can’t possibly wear the same thing as my friend Sara!

Some, however, were not impressed by the joking:

The Public Service Act, which was originally introduced in 1973, has faced much resistance since it was relaunched three years ago. Instituting compulsory public service is an attempt to ensure some equality between young women and their male counterparts, who are required to complete up to three years service in the Egyptian military.
