The director of security in Shabwa province located in southeastern Yemen Brigadier Ahmed Mekdshi said in a statement a "plot by al-Qaeda targeting Yemeni and foreign officials including military figures was foiled." He did not disclose the identity of these targets.

He added that security forces found during a sweep carried out in the town of Al Shabwa against al Qaeda elements documents and plans by the terrorist organization in the home of one of its leaders in the town of Al Hota. He pointed out that most of the population who had been displaced from the town during the raid returned home.

It is noteworthy that clashes took place over a week in Shabwa region between the army and security forces and suspected members of al-Qaeda, which led to the death of dozens from both sides.
