“As simple as ABC” - Dubai World launches breast cancer awareness campaign for women employees
In keeping with the policy of safeguarding its employees’ health and welfare, Dubai World today (Monday, July 7) launched a breast cancer awareness campaign - “as simple as ABC, (Against Breast Cancer),” for women employees within its various business units.
“As simple as ABC,” launched at a ceremony at the Emirates Towers in Dubai, is a major step for Dubai World as the Group focuses on more areas of health care for its employees.
Dubai World has signed on as a Charter Company with the Vital Voices, a leading non-governmental organisation working globally for the empowerment of women, and has planned various health and promotional programmes for the campaign, which will continue until the end of December this year.
HE Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Dubai World Chairman, said: “Dubai World has always realised the importance of a healthy workforce in its pursuit for global achievements. Employee welfare is an integral part of Dubai World’s corporate policy and its growth. Our belief that more can be done to cover all possible areas to ensure employees’ health, has prompted us to step up our activities in that direction. The “as simple as ABC” campaign reflects Dubai World’s concern for employees’ health.”
Ms. Manal Shaheen, Director of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service, Nakheel, who spoke at the launch event, said:
“ ‘as simple as ABC’ is close to Dubai World’s heart because of the far-reaching effect it can have on the life of every woman employee in the Group.”
She urged every female employee to join the campaign, spread awareness and initiate action.
Dr. Sawsan Al Madhi, Secretary General of Friends of Cancer Patients Society, the Sharjah-based charitable organisation which supports the campaign, said:
“‘as simple as ABC’ is a noble and timely effort by Dubai World. This will add strength to the campaign against breast cancer, which needs maximum commitment from all of us. Being always close to those who suffer from the shock and pain of this disease, Friends of Cancer Patients Society is aware of the immediacy of the campaign. Our goal is to provide moral, financial and practical support for those who are afflicted with cancer and we are happy to be part of Dubai World’s praiseworthy effort. I am sure this will benefit everyone.”
Ms Sharon Evans, a breast cancer survivor, addressed the gathering, recalling her experiences and the steps she took in fighting off the threat to her life.
“as simple as ABC” is also part of Vital Voices’ global awareness campaign against breast cancer, which is chaired by US First Lady Laura Bush who launched the programme during her visit to Dubai earlier this year.
The campaign offers free mammograms and check-ups to all its employees, which would costs about Dhs800 - Dhs1,000 when done externally. The tests are done in co-ordination with Neuron, which manages and monitors the Dubai World Health Care Programme.
Over 150 women employees from various subsidiary companies took part in the launch event. The campaign will identify and educate key women personnel from within the business units as well as train them to take the message back to the female employees within their respective units.
The campaign is the latest health care programme Dubai World has launched in line with its employees’ welfare policy. The Group recently enhanced its Employee Healthcare Programme with added medical facilities benefiting employees at all levels.
