Ten people were killed overnight by suspected Islamic militants at Mouzaia, in Algeria's Blida region about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the capital Algiers, security services officials said Saturday, quoted by AFP.
The region is home to the hardline Armed Islamic Group (GIA), one of two movements which refused to accept a conditional amnesty offered to Islamic guerrillas by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika after he came to power in April 1999.
Since the beginning of this year, about 1,300 people have been killed in violence related to the insurgency, according to AFP’s count compiled from press reports.
Last week, seven people from the same family were slaughtered by suspected militants under similar circumstances.
Also, an Islamic extremist group allegedly killed 12 people overnight at Berrouaghia, south of the Algerian capital Algiers, in mid-July.
