The number of divorce and marital disputes in Dubai resulting from messages sent through electronic media, like the internet or mobile phone messages (SMS), have gone up considerably, according to Abdel Salam Mohammed Darweesh, adviser at the family counseling section of Dubai courts, quoted by the Khaleej Times.
Over the past two months, 18 such cases were filed in Dubai courts, Darweesh said.
"In Sharia (Islamic law), the words 'you are divorced,' spoken or written by a husband to his wife, are sufficient to effect a divorce if the husband confirms having uttered or written the words," he said.
"If the husband denies having spoken or written the words in court, the wife will have to produce two witnesses having heard or read the message in order to prove her claim about validity of the divorce," Darweesh told Khaleej Times on Tuesday - Albawaba.com
