ALBAWABA - At least 21 people have suffered from suffocation due to inhaling gases in the southern port area of Aqaba on Tuesday morning. The suffocation cases are believed to have been caused by ammonia.
Citing official sources, Roya TV reported that at 3 AM today, civil defense teams in Aqaba dealt with cases of suffocation believed to be caused by ammonia. Most of the injured were transported to Prince Hashem Military Hospital to receive the necessary treatment.
According to an official statement, at 12:15 a.m., operational rooms in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone reported leakage of gases in the port area in the southern parts of the city.
The statement added that "around 20 port workers were transferred for shortness of breath during their work in the southern industrial zone to nearby medical centers, and other cases were also transferred to Prince Hashim Military Hospital in Aqaba".
The Authority noted that "in order to protect the interest of the safety of citizens in the city of Aqaba, monitoring and control of the quality of ambient air will remain in action to take precautionary and preventive measures in conjunction with fluctuating weather conditions".
