Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday announced the unity government based in Ramallah would resign within the next 24 hours, AFP reports.

According to officials who attended the meeting, Abbas told members of the Revolutionary Council, "within 24 hours the Palestinian government will resign.”

Secretary general Amin Maqbul earlier told AFP the government would resign over its lack of effectiveness in Gaza and the obstacles posed by working with Hamas.

Speaking with AFP, Maqbul said, “The government will resign in the next 24 hours because this one is weak and there is no chance that Hamas will allow it to work in Gaza."

Ihab Bseiso, spokesman for the consensus government, told AFP he was unaware of the matter.

"We had a meeting today and we didn't discuss this issue," he said.
