The secretary of the executive committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), Mahmoud Abbas, heads to Damascus on Thursday on his first visit in 15 years. Sources told the official Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA, that the visit by Abbas (better known as Abu Mazen) to Damascus was part of efforts to improve relations between the Palestinian Authority and the Syrian government.
The step is also to pave the way for the long-awaited visit of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to Damascus, which has been postponed several times, the sources said – Albawaba.com
