A policeman killed five of his colleagues in the Spin Boldak district of southern Kandahar province, an official saidon Tuesday.
The insider attack took place in a border police post located in the zero-point area near the Durand Line before dawn, the governor’s spokesman said.
Samim Khpalwak told Pajhwok Afghan News the rogue policeman shot dead his five colleagues at around 3pm when they were patrolling the area.
He said the attacker, a resident of northern Takhar province, managed to flee across the border into Pakistani territory.The incident is under investigation.
Police spokesman Zia Durrani, confirmed the insider attack but he was unaware of the exact number of fatalities.
A delegation has been sent to Spin Boldak to investigate the attack, he added. The exact number of policemen killed in the incident will be known after the investigation.
A security official based in the border town, wishing anonymity, said seven police personnel, including a security post commander, were killed by the attack, who also took away weapons and ammunition of the victims.
Meanwhile, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, with the group’s spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi saying seven that policemen were killed in. He said nine weapons were also seized.
Several police personnel have been killed in similar incidents in Maiwand, Ghorak, Zherai and other districts of Kandahar in the past.
