The spy service on Monday said 26 militants have been detained as a result of a series of operations in southern Kandahar province.

In a statement, the National Directorate of Security said intelligence operatives detained the armed militants from various parts of the province, including the provincial capital, Kandahar City.

It claimed the detainees had been planning to detonate a car full of explosives and a bomb-rigged rickshaw, but they were arrested before doing so.

The vehicle and the rickshaw, one rocket launcher, nine Kalashnikovs, two pistols, eight roadside bombs, a walkie-talkie set, thousands of bullets of light weapons and some military equipment were recovered from the detainees, the statement said.
