Ruth Yaron has been approved as the next Israeli Army Spokesman, becoming the first woman to be appointed to the position.

Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer approved Monday the recommendation made by Major-General Moshe Ya'alon, who has been named the next chief of General Staff of the Israeli forces, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Yaron will be the third female brigadier-general in the Israeli army.

She has served in the Israeli Foreign Service for the past two decades, mostly in roles dealing with the media. At one time, she was head of the Jordanian desk at the Foreign Ministry.

Born in Constantine, Algeria, in 1957, Yaron immigrated with her family to Israel in 1961. (Albawaba.com)
