Algerian President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika has announced that he is canceling a military procession to mark the 50th anniversary of the start of the Algerian war of independence. His reason is that Algeria is committed to peace and therefore will only conduct civilian ceremonies to mark the occasion.
The Presidential announcement is probably linked to rising tensions with Morocco over the Western Sahara issue where a military confrontation is remotely possible. The Algerian army has not paraded in a decade because of the civil war which waged in the country. This 50th anniversary is meant to mark national conciliation, peace and security and Bouteflika originally planned the ceremony to mark national strength and unity. (albawaba.com)
