An archeological site dating back to the Phoenician time (6th century) was recently discovered in Ksar-Sghir (the Small Castle), which is situated on the coastal road between Tangier and Sabta. Yabiladi reports that according to the first observations of the team of the National Institute of Archaeology, the site sheltered four civilizations: Punics, Mauritanians, Romans and Muslims. Excavations carried out since 1972 have provided important information about the history of Ksahr Sghir in particular about the military activities in the area between the 12th and 16th centuries.
