A blast outside a barracks in southeast Tehran that Iranian state radio said wounded two people was carried out in response to a new wave of executions, Iran's main armed opposition group said Sunday.

The HQ of a Revolutionary Guards Bassij (Islamic volunteers) battalion was "pounded in a series of attacks by young dissidents," said the People's Mujahedeen in a statement received in Nicosia, according to AFP

"This operation was in response to the new wave of executions and cruel punishments recently carried out in public," it said.

Iranian radio reported that two people were wounded in an explosion, which took place outside an air force barracks in southeast Tehran late Saturday. The blast occurred in Piruzi avenue, with the two wounded apparently passers-by," it added.

Windows were broken in the barracks, located near a military airport, the radio said.

In an earlier statement, the Mujahedeen claimed responsibility for the blast on behalf of its fighters in Iran but then issued a correction due to what a spokesman called a "translation mistake". (Albawaba.com)
