According to AFP, on Monday Syrian President Bashar Assad announced a “general amnesty” for all crimes committed during the Syrian civil war.

State television reported that the decree was issued in the context of “social forgiveness, national cohesion calls for coexistence, as the army secures several military victories.” Very few details were released about who would be included in the amnesty, AFP reports.

Assad recently won reelection in what was considered by many to be neither free nor fair. The Syrian regime has systematically jailed and tortured tens of thousands of its own people.

The three-year-long Syrian civil war has killed over 160,000 people and forced millions to flee.
