Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki Thursday met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on issues of mutual interests. According to IRNA, the Syrian president said that it is the legitimate rights of all countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran to benefit from nuclear energy to go ahead with national development plans.

Lambasting the unilateral interference of big powers in international fora, al-Assad said the move would weaken credit and prestige of international organizations.

The Syrian president criticized the UN resolution 1680, adopted Wednesday, as a blow to national sovereignty of two independent countries forcing them to set up political relations and demarcation of a frontier line. "Such measures are the outcome of interference of big powers in the United Nations which constitutes blatant violation of international law and regulations," President al-Assad said.

On Iraq's developments, the Syrian leader said "We back and welcome political process for formation of new Iraqi government and Syria is keen on expansion of all-out relations with Iraq."

The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, called the US policies in the region as "very wrong".
