August Wilhelm Henningsen was born in Langballig, Germany, on 16 November 1950. After graduating from high school, he studied mechanical engineering at Brunswick Technical University, specializing in aeronautics. Employed at the German Aerospace Research Institute, where he did scientific work, in 1979 he graduated from the university as a professional engineer.

On 1 October 1979 August Wilhelm Henningsen joined Lufthansa German Airlines in Hamburg as a systems engineer. In 1981 he was transferred to Frankfurt, where he was put in charge of flight controls, dedicated trouble shooting and contact engineering for the flight operation department. He then took over as head of the aircraft-control group in Hamburg. After that he was promoted to manager of aircraft structure and systems engineering.

Starting in 1989, he became responsible for aircraft cabins and systems as senior head of that department. In 1991 he was placed in charge of the overhaul line of the Boeing 737 fleet at the Berlin-Schönefeld base. From November 1993 until May 1997 he has headed up the aircraft components services division at Lufthansa Technik AG in Hamburg. The company was formally founded on 17 October 1994.

From 1 August 1997 he was General Manager of AMECO Beijing, a joint venture between Lufthansa German Airlines and Air China.

On 1 April 2000 Henningsen moved to Hamburg working as a member of Lufthansa Technik’s Executive Board. He was in charge of the newly created MRO product and services division. Since 1 January 2001 he has been Chairman of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Technik AG.

August Wilhelm Henningsen is married and has two children. He enjoys playing the piano and is an enthusiastic sailplaner and windsurfer.
