ALBAWABA- U.S. President Joe Biden has called for Americans to “bring down the temperature” following Donald Trump’s surprising victory in the U.S. election, urging calm and pledging an orderly transfer of power.
Speaking from the White House Rose Garden, Biden addressed disappointed Democrats, particularly those disheartened by Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat, and reassured them that “setbacks are unavoidable, but giving up is unforgivable.”
He emphasized that a defeat does not signify the end, urging Americans to remain hopeful and resilient.
Biden's comments came after Trump’s unexpected comeback, which Democrats attributed to growing discontent over the economy, particularly inflation.
The President also took the opportunity to reaffirm the integrity of the U.S. electoral system, in contrast to Trump, who had previously attempted to overturn his 2020 loss by pushing unfounded claims of election fraud.
Some Democrats have criticized Biden for seeking reelection, with some blaming him for Harris' defeat. There are also concerns that the Democratic Party’s leadership, particularly Biden’s, has lost touch with voters who are struggling with rising living costs.
Trump’s win, despite polls predicting a closer race, underscores the widespread dissatisfaction with the economy, border security, and cultural issues.
Biden reiterated his commitment to ensuring a peaceful transition, while Vice President Harris vowed to support Trump’s transition, despite the contentious race.
Both Democrats and Republicans now face the challenge of reconciling the deep divisions exposed during this election cycle.
