A bomb exploded early Friday outside the apartment of an army lieutenant in this Basque town in northern Spain but no one was injured, police said.

The bomb, placed on a fourth-floor landing, caused significant material damage. Many people were trapped in their apartments after locks were warped by the blast.

The targeted soldier was not at home when the blast occurred.

Although no one has so far claimed responsibility, soldiers are often targeted by the Basque separatist organisation ETA or other groups of young Basque separatists.

Meanwhile separatists and their sympathisers marched through the streets of San Sebastian on Friday to mark the death of a radical ETA activist who was blown up by her own bomb, police there said.

The regional Basque government had earlier outlawed any demonstrations following the death of 20-year-old Olaia Castresana, saying that the rallies would be tantamount to condoning terrorism.

Several dozen people carrying basque flags with black ribbons gathered nonetheless in the center of San Sebastian, before being dispersed by the regional Basque police force -- VITORIA, Spain (AFP)
