As part of the IPTC Education Week being run in conjunction with the International Petroleum Technology Conference and Exhibition held in Dubai last week, BP took a group of final year engineering students from leading universities and institutes, to its gas processing plant in Sajaa, Sharjah. The students, who came from as far away as Vietnam and Russia included students from UAE, Kuwait, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, were given a BP safety at work induction, a technical presentation and visited a well site. The day long program was part of BP’s continued commitment to encouraging the nationalization of its workforce, and inspiring and developing energy employees of the future. This is particularly important at a time when the oil and gas industry is facing severe shortages of skilled engineering staff. It is anticipated that the energy sector will lose 40 per cent of its skilled workers to retirement over the next ten years which coincides with increased demand for petroleum and other energy supplies.
