Five people were killed and 80 others injured Tuesday after Houthi militants opened fire on a protest in central Yemen, a local official and medics told AFP.

Demonstrators gathered for the third day in Taiz to protest the extremists' presence after they took control of parts of the city. The Houthis had sent thousands of troops to the strategic area, between the capital Sanaa and President Abd-Rabbo Mansour Hadi's stronghold of Aden.

This is a developing story; please check back for more details.
