Reuters reports that a truck bomb exploded at a police checkpoint south of Baghdad on Sunday.
AFP reports that 47 people have been confirmed dead at the Hilla Hospital, with at least 20 Iraqi security forces killed. At least 72 people are reported wounded.
Falah al-Radhi, head of the provincial security committee, told Reuters that a bombing this size was unprecedented in the area.
"It's the largest bombing in the Hilla province to date," Al-Radhi confirmed to Reuters.
Hilla faced another suicide bombing in March 2014, with 50 people killed in a blast.
No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing yet.
