At least 90 dead, 1,154 wounded and 1,563 detained after an attempted military coup in Turkey, according to state-run Anadolu Agency.
Friday night saw Turkey overrun with violent fighting, as a faction of the Turkish armed forces attempted to overthrow the government with soldiers taking over some news outlets and tanks and helicopters blocking bridges.
Meanwhile, war planes flew over Ankara and explosions have rocked the Turkish parliament.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took to FaceTime video to call on Turkish citizens to take the the streets, helping to quash the coup with dozens of rebels eventually abandoning their tanks.
A sucessful overthrow of Erdogan, who has been in power since 2003, would have marked a major power shift in the Middle East, transforming one of America's main regional allies as war rages on its borders. However, with Turkey positioned between the European Union, the attempted coup still may have significant repercussions, as Daesh militants turget Turkish cities and conflict rages between the government and Kurdish separatists.
